Why Your Website's Bounce Rate Is So High (And What to Do About It)

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who land on your site and leave without clicking anywhere else. A high bounce rate โ€” anything above 70โ€“80% โ€” means most of your visitors are arriving, looking around for a second, and leaving.

That's a problem. It means your site isn't holding attention, and it means the traffic you're getting (from search, social, or ads) isn't converting into leads or customers.

The good news is that high bounce rates usually have fixable causes. Here are the most common ones and what to do about each.

The Most Common Causes of High Bounce Rate

1. Slow Load Time
This is the #1 reason visitors leave before engaging. Studies consistently show that 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. They don't wait. They hit the back button and find a faster site.

If your site loads slowly, nothing else matters. You could have the best content in the world, but no one will see it.

Start here: run a free speed test using Google PageSpeed Insights. If your score is below 50 on mobile, speed is almost certainly contributing to your bounce rate. 2. Confusing or Cluttered Layout
When visitors can't quickly figure out what your site is about and what to do next, they leave. A homepage with 8 different calls to action, text-heavy blocks with no visual hierarchy, or navigation menus with 15+ items overwhelms people and creates decision paralysis.

Fix: Simplify. Your homepage should communicate one clear value proposition above the fold (before any scrolling). One primary CTA. Clean navigation with 5โ€“7 items maximum. White space is your friend.

3. No Clear Call to Action
If visitors can read your content but then have no obvious next step, they'll leave. Every page needs to answer the question: "What should I do now?" If you're a plumber, that's "Call us." If you're a consultant, that's "Book a free call." If you're selling software, that's "Start a free trial."

Make it obvious. Make it prominent. Repeat it. A good CTA should appear above the fold and at the bottom of every key page.

4. Broken Links or Error Pages
If someone clicks a link on your site and lands on a 404 error page, they'll almost always hit back and leave. Broken internal links create dead ends that destroy user flow.

Check for broken links periodically using a tool or automated scan. Redirecting old URLs to relevant pages prevents visitors from hitting dead ends.

5. Poor Mobile Experience
If your site isn't optimized for mobile, the majority of your visitors โ€” on phones โ€” have a frustrating experience and leave quickly. Text too small, buttons too close together, images that overflow the screen โ€” these all spike your mobile bounce rate.

Check how your site looks and performs on mobile right now. If it's not good, fix that before anything else.

6. Misleading Traffic or Wrong Audience
Sometimes a high bounce rate isn't a site problem โ€” it's a traffic problem. If you're running ads that promise something your site doesn't deliver, or ranking for keywords that don't match what you actually offer, visitors will bounce because you attracted the wrong people.

Check your analytics to see which pages and traffic sources have the highest bounce rates. A blog post ranking for a generic term might have a high bounce rate simply because the traffic isn't qualified.

How to Measure Your Bounce Rate

If you have Google Analytics installed (you should), find your bounce rate under Reports โ†’ Engagement โ†’ Overview. Look at it by page and by traffic source to identify patterns.

If you don't have analytics set up yet, that's another gap in your site health. You can't fix what you can't measure.
